"Paint with me" Episode 5

"Paint with me" Episode 5

Right! Now that I've got a system down... (light Leadbelcher "zenithal" over Chaos Black) here's three photos of the pipes; nice and easy!

Looks good! And then... we hit a snag.

I decided I wanted to keep the containers open... potentially for Necromunda/Kill Team etc, being able to shoot through them seems much cooler. I also wanted to be able to stack them on each other... so this was the "best" orientation to get the black undercoat on every surface. Not too bad, right?

Between repositioning them to get the other end, and then spraying "inside" the containers, this felt like my first major error in building. If I was doing this again, I would probably assemble them in halves and then undercoat all of them then glue together before zenithal. I have a feeling it was a little awkward assembling them as is, so that might not have been an option anyway, but... Oh well. Also they have Storm Bolters that can be popped into the holes next to the hatches on the roofs; I'm leaving those off so they can stack nicely.

So here we go, Zenithal Leadbelcher and....

You know what? Job's a good 'un.

At this point, I felt like I was on a roll! Over the next week I finished gluing up all the minis from the 9th Command Edition, and started to prep them for painting:

Chaos Black undercoat as usual.

Next was a White Scar Zenithal for the Marines and... Leadbelcher Zenithal for the Necrons!

The Necrons definitely need a bit more of a pop to stand out against the terrain (which has been painted in exactly the same fashion), but... they look pretty dang good, all things considered! The Marines are now detailed enough to be able to start painting - as I said way back in Episode 1(?) this is actually the point I'd be happy with if I was just giving a bit of life to Boardgame pieces.

I decided to have a bit of a play with the paints from the Paint & Tools Kit, along with a Contrast (which I've never used before) on the Intercessors, before committing to the Combat Patrols from Leviathan. This was all done using the starter brush from the kit too.

So here we go!

First up: Basilicanum Grey. I made the mistake of trying to thin this and use it like a regular paint... It definitely seems like the best approach is to just slap it on, and let it do its thing!

Next some Mephiston Red for their chests, eyes. purity seals, swords and bolters. From this:

To this (also with Leadbelcher for the chainswords and bolter bits):

A bit of Averland Sunset for their other details, and we get:

2x Battle-ready minis (minus bases). There's plenty more that can be done to make them better - dry brushing some highlights onto the chainsword, tidying up the shoulders etc but... this was all done during a single FNM!

Next time will probably see an attempt at basing these two... And then we start onto Leviathan
