Board Game Advent Calendar - Day 15

Dune: Imperium

Dune: Imperium is a game that uses deck-building to add a hidden-information angle to traditional worker placement. It finds inspiration in elements and characters from the Dune legacy, both the new film from Legendary Pictures and the seminal literary series from Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson.

Dune: Imperium is a game that I adore. It feels thematically great - lots of political maneuvering appropriate for one of the Great Houses, with different abilities depending on exactly which of the leaders you embody. War always has an impact, but its not the be-all and end-all of the game, and getting to a certain location first - working out how to block your opponents feels glorious. Games always feel tight, and while you can build a busted deck (that's half the fun of deckbuilding!) the limits on how you play your hand out make this feel refreshing.

Watching Dire Wolf & Renegade adapt deckbuilding first from Eternal (based on their hit digital TCG) to Clank! (a great dungeon crawl) and now to Dune and the evolution that has come from each step really makes me wonder what's next in this line!

Perfect for: A nice after-dinner game to unwind and relax with.

Complexity: 3.07/5

If you like this, try: Clank! (any of them, really! Just work out how much lighter of a game you want to experience)
